Wildfires Are Coming For Wine, Weed, And Christmas

Wildfires Are Coming For Wine, Weed, And Christmas  There are 86 large wildfires that have burned 1,498,205 acres in 12 US states and emit large quantities of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and dangerous particulate matter into the atmosphere this summer that could affect wine weed and Christmas.  The West Coast fire season is off to a fiery start, and an abundance of smoke can destroy precious vineyards and damage the fruit.  University of California Davis researchers say California's wine country is being consumed by a megadrought and resulting wildfires that taint and affect crop yields.  "We're seeing the impact of climate and climate change," said Megan Bartlett, a UC Davis plant biologist and assistant professor. "Especially after the heatwaves and the megadrought a few years ago, we really saw, as an industry, declines in (crop) yield. These are really pressing problems, especially now." The smoke of wildfires permeates regions like Napa Valley and other top-producing vineyards, changing the taste of wine.  "Can you imagine licking an ashtray?" Anita Oberholster, a Cooperative Extension enology specialist at UC Davis, said. "When wines are heavily impacted, it can taste like that." The smoke of wildfires can also stress or even kill marijuana plants growing outdoor or in greenhouse operations.  "Smoke taint is the most obvious and the most apparent threat to cannabis as [it's] exposed to these forest fires, and that's something you're going to be able to readily tell from just qualitatively examining the cannabis," Josh Wurzer, president of SC Labs, told Cannabis Business Times.  "So, that's certainly a concern—just ruining the flavor of the cannabis," Wurzer said.  Although Christmas is about five months away, record-breaking heatwaves and raging wildfires are destroying Christmas tree farms in Oregon. We noted days ago that Reuters spoke with multiple tree farm operators, who said their crop yields this year would be reduced.  Dozens of wildfires burning in the Western half of the US are unleashing near-surface smoke in parts of California but also countrywide. Smoke was visible on the East Coast last week.  So what this all means is that if wildfires persist, wine and marijuana crop yields could be affected and or at least tainted, which would lower quality, and Christmas tree yields would also be reduced, resulting in higher prices.  Tyler Durden Sat, 07/31/2021 - 23:30

Watch: NHS Nurses Demand To COVID Test Newborn Baby, Claim It's Not Mother's Property Once Outside Of Womb

Watch: NHS Nurses Demand To COVID Test Newborn Baby, Claim It's Not Mother's Property Once Outside Of Womb Authored by Paul Joseph Watson via Summit News, A video out of the UK shows NHS nurses demanding to COVID test a newborn baby, claiming it’s not the mother’s property once outside the womb and then threatening to report her to social services for refusing. The shocking video, which was posted to Twitter, shows a heavily pregnant mother in a hospital bed being lectured by nurses about how it’s mandatory for the baby to be given a COVID test immediately after birth. “It is my property,” states the mother, to which one of the nurses responds, “so you will…while the baby’s in your abdomen.” “So you’re saying once the baby comes out it’s not my property no more, yes it is, I gave birth to it, it’s got my blood running through it,” the mother asserts. The nurse then continued to insist she “explain” why the baby needs a COVID test, which only serves to stress out the pregnant woman. VIDEO. NHS Nurses tell high risk expectant mother that they WILL be P C R Testing the baby once born, that the baby isn't "The mothers property" once out of the abdomen & that the Safeguarding team (Social Services) are being notified because of their refusal. Heroes folks .... pic.twitter.com/oPSVuWiGRo — Dissent Media (Official Account) ♿ (@DisabledJourno) July 28, 2021 “Do you really think I need this bullshit about COVID when I’ve got a risk of losing my baby?” the woman asks. The father of the baby then suggests the pair leave the hospital, stating, “They’re not COVID testing my baby – end of.” “You can’t tell me that you get to give me the say of what happens once my baby’s born – I don’t think so, you can’t do nothing to my baby without my permission,” says the mother. The nurse then responds by saying the mother’s refusal to have her baby COVID tested will be documented and passed on to social services (the Safeguarding team), essentially meaning that the mother will be investigated for neglect and possibly face authorities trying to remove the baby from her care. “You’re so good aren’t you, you people?” the mother sardonically states at the end of the clip, perhaps in reference to how nurses in the UK have been deified as a result of the pandemic, with people at one point being asked to participate in weekly applause sessions to show gratitude to the NHS. *  *  * Brand new merch now available! Disband The FBI

Disband The FBI Authored by Chris Farrell via The Gatestone Institute, The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) continues its downward spiral into terminal corruption. Sadly, the scandals, criminality and ethical abuses of the organization are largely ignored by the American public and by the institutions of government charged with oversight and correction. Outrage after outrage is reported, hearings are held, Inspector General reports are issued -- but the systemic corruption is never really tackled and dirty cops skate away virtually unscathed. This situation is constitutionally unacceptable, corrosive to public trust in law enforcement, and a threat to the survival of the republic. In the past few days alone, we have learned that the October 2020 Michigan governor kidnap plot was largely a creation of the FBI; a "senior FBI official" was on the take from media organizations; and another assistant director was in a "romantic relationship with a subordinate" and involved in "other misconduct." The leadership failures documented by the Office of the Inspector General are now almost standard and part of a tiresome media drip-torture for the public to endure. Meanwhile, the FBI had the audacity to issue a Stasi-like tweet urging "monitoring of 'family members and peers' for extremism." Remember: what we learn about the FBI in the press are only the stories that are SO outrageous that the FBI cannot keep a lid on them and is forced to make disclosures via a toothless Inspector General report -- but never anything that results in a criminal indictment. Imagine what the ordinary day-to-day misconduct in FBI offices across the country could be. And these scandals don't just amount to "bad press" – in several of these, federal courts scourge the FBI for lawbreaking. Additionally, Inspector General report after report details FBI abuses such as whistleblowers being retaliated against and ignoring "high-risk" employees who fail polygraph tests. There are still apologists for the FBI. Some seek to defend the organization with the rationalization that "it's always been that way." That sort of thinking is a cynical effort to inoculate and immunize real criminality as something normal and regular. "Get used to it kid, that's the way of the world," they offer with a shrug and a grin. Others, like Sean Hannity, cling to the "just a few bad apples" excuse. That sort of FBI cheerleading flies in the face of a litany of systemic abuses and pervasive abusers. The FBI ran a coup against President Trump. It failed. The following got away: Comey, McCabe, Strzok, Page, Clinesmith, Pientka, Brower, Baker, et al. Any real consequences for attempting to overthrow the government of the United States? No. In May 2018, veteran reporter Eric Lichtblau of Time magazine wrote an article titled, "The FBI Is in Crisis. It's Worse Than You Think," wherein he detailed: "The bureau, which is used to making headlines for nabbing crooks, has been grabbing the spotlight for unwanted reasons: fired leaders, texts between lovers and, most of all, attacks by President Trump ... internal and external reports have found lapses throughout the agency, and longtime observers, looking past the partisan haze, see a troubling picture: something really is wrong at the FBI... other painful, more public failures as well: missed opportunities to prevent mass shootings that go beyond the much-publicized overlooked warnings in the Parkland, Fla., school killings; an anguishing delay in the sexual-molestation probe into Olympic gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar; and evidence of misconduct by agents in the aftermath of standoffs with armed militias in Nevada and Oregon. FBI agents are facing criminal charges ranging from obstruction to leaking classified material." Four years later and the situation has not improved. Let us go back to the Michigan governor "kidnap plot" for a moment. The entire operation was an anti-Trump political smear job -- and was called into question for being exactly that back when the story broke in October 2020. Now we find out that the FBI was running at least a dozen paid "confidential informants" in the plot. It was a plot they dreamed up. It was actually a rehash of an Obama-era 2010 FBI plot by the so-called "Hutarees" that fell apart in court. The FBI worries about "entrapment" in these cases because the FBI must demonstrate that there is reasonable suspicion that the subject in a case is about to be or is engaging in criminal activity. The government then allows the criminal/terrorist the opportunity to commit the act. In these cases, the FBI has good reason to worry. More disturbingly, this is nothing new. Look at the "Herald Square Bomber" case as another instance in which the FBI identifies, recruits, trains, dispatches and then arrests the very informant they recruited in the first place. The FBI appears to have fabricated plots and terrorists to advance their own agenda and statistics. It looks, walks, and talks like "entrapment." Are there really no other bad guys out there for the FBI to go after? They need to focus on this modus operandi? Questions are now being raised as to whether the FBI had a role in the Capitol Hill protests of January 6, 2021. When one examines the FBI's involvement in the Trump-Russia collusion hoax; Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) abuses; standing by idly while in possession of Hunter Biden's Ukraine and Burisma-laden laptops, while President Trump endured a second phony impeachment; and the frame-up of Trump's National Security Advisor, Lieutenant General Michael Flynn – it is not too difficult to imagine. And that is just the problem: It is not difficult to imagine. It should be an "impossibility." The FBI needs to go away. It should happen in an orderly and thoughtful process, over a period of months. Congress should authorize and create an investigative division in the U.S. Marshals Service and open applications for law enforcement officer seeking to be rigorously screened, vetted and then accessed into the new organization. Similar action was taken before in the very creation of the FBI. It is now time to clean house and restore the public's trust in the "premier investigative agency" of federal law enforcement. Ever Given Containers Finally Being Offloaded At Port Of Rotterdam

Ever Given Containers Finally Being Offloaded At Port Of Rotterdam By Kim Link-Wills, Despite the early-morning hour, 5:15 a.m. Thursday in the Netherlands, the Ever Given “arrived amid great interest,” according to a Port of Rotterdam statement.  Normally a container ship’s arrival in port does not warrant a press release. But the case of the Ever Given, which will be forever infamous for getting stuck in the Suez Canal, is anything but normal and prompted Port of Rotterdam officials to post a brief statement and two photos of the Ever Given’s arrival Thursday.   The statement said the berthing of the Ever Given in Rotterdam went according to plan — well, a revised plan. The Evergreen Marine-operated container ship had been due in Rotterdam some four months earlier. The vessel was waylaid, of course, when it was lodged between the banks of the Suez Canal for six days in March.   The Port of Rotterdam said containers will be offloaded at its ECT Delta terminal. Boxes bound for Hamburg, Germany, will be loaded onto the Ever Utile over the weekend to finally continue their journey.  The Ever Given was en route from Yantian, China, through the Suez Canal to Rotterdam on March 23 when it was reportedly hit by strong winds and ran aground. It became stuck sideways in the canal, blocking both northbound and southbound traffic.  The ship was freed on March 29 and moved to Egypt’s Great Bitter Lake, where it was detained until earlier this month while the Suez Canal Authority, the ship’s owner and insurers negotiated a settlement to release the vessel and get its crew and cargo moving again.  The International Chamber of Shipping said the blockage of the canal cost $5.1 billion in world trade per day.  The Ever Given is expected to sail for Felixtowe early next week to deliver the remaining containers to the United Kingdom. According to FreightWaves maritime market expert Henry Byers, the Ever Given typically carries such goods as apparel, electrical equipment, tools and bicycles. Thursday’s press release noted that handling ships the size of the Ever Given, which has a capacity of 20,000 twenty-foot equivalent units, is in fact routine. Rotterdam’s container terminals handle between five and eight large vessels each day.  Tyler Durden Fri, 07/30/2021 - 05:00

Piers Morgan Calls For Unvaccinated To Be Denied Medical Treatment

Piers Morgan Calls For Unvaccinated To Be Denied Medical Treatment Authored by Paul Joseph Watson via Summit News, Professional attention-seeker Piers Morgan is leading the charge for unvaccinated people to face state-sanctioned discrimination after he asserted that those who haven’t had the COVID jab should be denied medical treatment. Yes, really. “Those who refuse to be vaccinated, with no medical reason not to, should be refused NHS care if they then catch covid,” tweeted Morgan. “I’m hearing of anti-vaxxers using up ICU beds in London at vast expense to the taxpayer. Let them pay for their own stupidity & selfishness.” Morgan failed to mention that those who have chosen not to take the vaccine also pay for the NHS through their taxes. He subsequently called those who haven’t taken the shot “incredibly stupid and deeply depressing,” asking, “What the f*ck is wrong with you????” We are not far away from the likes of Morgan calling for round-ups and quarantine camps. pic.twitter.com/G2JdWRO4SQ — Paul Joseph Watson (@PrisonPlanet) July 28, 2021 Essentially, Morgan is arguing that people who refuse to allow themselves to be injected with vaccines linked with innumerable side-effects to ward off a virus for which they have a 99.8 per cent survival rate should be left to die in order to save money. If enacted, his ‘solution’ would also end up killing people who are admitted to hospital for ailments that have nothing to do with COVID, given that positive tests in hospitals are counted as COVID admissions even if the person is asymptomatic and is being treated for a non-COVID illness. As we have repeatedly stressed, a two-tier society is now being created where discrimination targeting the unvaccinated is becoming not only normalized but encouraged. Morgan is about one step removed from openly calling for the unvaccinated to be rounded up and incarcerated in medical prison camps. An added irony to his faux-populist authoritarianism is that Morgan himself has been caught repeatedly flouting the same COVID-19 rules that he aggressively demands be imposed on everyone else. *  *  * Brand new merch now available! Just How Transitory Is Inflation?

Just How Transitory Is Inflation? Authored by Michael Lebowitz via RealInvestmentAdvice.,com, Would you buy a five year CD paying 5%? We would be shocked if anyone answers “no.” On a relative basis, versus other fixed-income options, a 5% FDIC guaranteed CD is a no-brainer. However, to properly evaluate the CD or any investment, we need to factor in inflation expectations. If inflation for the next five years is 10%, the no-brainer CD will be a bust.  The pandemic is easing, and the winds of recovery are roaring at the economy’s back. Pent-up demand and the remnants of stimulus are driving robust economic growth. At the same time, the ability to produce and deliver goods remains greatly hampered. The result is inflation, the likes of which have not been seen in over a decade.   Making inflation forecasting even harder is considering how past and future monetary and fiscal stimulus might affect prices. Assumptions based on prior periods may prove right but may also be a recipe to lose 5% on a 5% CD. Given such a unique environment, we must be suspicious of confident media and Wall Street inflation narratives. This is a time where we must think for ourselves. To help you, we break down the 336 components and subcomponents of CPI to better appreciate what is driving the current inflation rate. In turn, this will prove helpful in thinking about future inflation rates. CPI Summary On July 13, 2021, the BLS released the June CPI report. The following table shows the headline results for the report. June’s prices climbed well above May’s levels, as well as almost all economists’ expectations. The monthly CPI change of +0.9 equates to an approximate 11% annualized rate. For those old enough to remember, the report brought back nightmares from the 1970s. Since 1990, there are only three other months in which the monthly rate rose by 0.9% or more. The 5.4% year-over-year rate of inflation is the largest in over a decade.  Digging Into Cupcake and Biscuit Prices The information below is from the most granular details within the CPI Index.  For example, the Food category comprises 13.9% of CPI. Over half of it is Food at Home. One component of Food at Home is Cereals. Within Cereals are flour, breakfast cereal, rice/pasta/cornmeal, bread, biscuits/rolls/muffins, cakes/cupcakes/cookies, and a catch-all other category. The following analysis dives into cupcakes, biscuits, and the other 153 products and product groupings compromising CPI. The distribution graph below shows the 153 products sorted by their respective year-over-year change in 2% increments. As shown, over 75% of the constituents are below the +5.4% year-over-year change in CPI (red line).  28% of the year-over-year changes were negative. On a monthly basis, not shown, 69% are below the monthly CPI change (+0.9%). The right-most column shows four subcomponents whose prices have risen by at least 20% in the last year. They are as follows: * Used Cars 45.2% * Gasoline +45.1% * Fuel Oil +44.5% * Other Motor Fuels +32.1% The left-most column shows two subcomponents whose prices have fallen by 10% or more. They are as follows: * Food at employee sites and schools (cafeteria food) -29.9% * Telephone hardware, calculators, and other information items -17.8% The following bar chart breaks down the last three monthly data points and most recent year-over-year data to show how the CPI index stacks up against the average and median of the underlying data. Price increases for most subcomponents are not overly concerning. The median inflation rate based on 153 goods is +3.6% annualized or 1.8% less than the CPI Index. Contribution Analysis While the data above helps us appreciate inflation, at least not yet, is not a widespread problem, it does not account for how we spend money. The BLS assigns a weighting for each good when calculating CPI. The table below shows the categories accounting for more than 2% of the CPI Index. While only constituting about 5% of the number of categories, these ten components account for over 50% of the CPI Index and almost 90% of June’s increase in CPI.   Gasoline and used cars alone are responsible for half of the year-over-year change in CPI. Transportation services, such as auto insurance, vehicle maintenance, and airline fares rose over 10%. While smaller price increases than gasoline and used cars, transportation has nearly twice the two products’ weighting. Shelter constitutes about a third of CPI. Shelter is comprised of owners’ equivalent rent (OER), which attempts to value housing and rental prices. Both measures were tame at 2.3% and 1.9%, respectively. Sticky versus Flexible Prices To forecast future inflation, it’s beneficial to understand which prices are sticky and which are flexible. Sticky prices change infrequently. However, when they increase, they tend to stick, so to speak. Examples include education, communication services, and motor vehicle insurance. Flexible prices oscillate over time. Examples include gasoline, fruits and vegetables, and car rentals.   The Atlanta Fed distributes a sticky and flexible price index. The index constituents and explanation of each index is found HERE. The graph below charts the Fed’s sticky and flexible price indexes. Not surprisingly, the sticky index is stable, and the flexible index is volatile. Changes in CPI tend to be heavily correlated with the flexible index and not so much with the sticky index. Since 2012 the correlation between the flexible index and CPI is 96%. The sticky index and CPI only have a 30% correlation.  Given the flexible index drives CPI, we look at the four largest contributors to the June surge in CPI. We want to understand if they are flexible or sticky prices and assess their likelihood of reverting to pre-pandemic levels.   If prices are unchanged in the future for these goods, the rate of inflation will gravitate toward zero. If they fall in price, they will exert negative pressure on CPI. The following four components, detailed below, account for 76% of the recent increase in CPI. Let’s review whether they are sticky or flexible, as well as expectations for future price changes.  Shelter (OER and rent) Shelter is by far the most important factor in the CPI Index. OER, accounting for most of shelter prices, are only up 2.3% versus last year. The smaller subcomponent, rent, is up even less at 1.9%.  Shelter prices tend to be sticky. Other than the 2008 financial crisis and the Great Depression, the U.S. never really experienced a meaningful decline in national housing values. While the BLS’s OER price measure is tame, house prices are not. The well followed Case-Shiller home price index is up 17% year over year. Rental prices are also picking up. Per Apartment List “So far in 2021, rental prices have grown a staggering 9.2 percent. To put that in context, in previous years growth from January to June is usually just 2 to 3 percent.” Our concern is CPI Shelter Index catches up to reality, providing a significant boost to inflation in the months ahead. Further, given shelter tends to be sticky, a reversal in prices is less likely. All that said, the correlation between the reality of house and rent prices and the CPI shelter levels is weak. The graph below shows little correlation between CPI Shelter prices and the Case-Shiller Index. The CPI index trends from the housing boom of 2000-2007 are not much different than periods before and after. The second graph shows the disconnect between actual rent and the CPI’s calculation of owners’ equivalent rent. Transportation Services Transportation services have a 5.27% weighting in CPI but account for about 10% of the recent increase in CPI. Of note in this category is car and truck rental prices rising 87% versus last year. Motor vehicle insurance is up 11.3%, and public transportation, including airfare, is up 17%. Most of the line items in this broad category are flexible. Airfares, accounting for .74% of CPI, are much higher today than last year because air travel was dead last year. The same story holds for auto rentals. Further, due to a lack of supply, auto rental chains sharply increased prices versus those before the pandemic. As the shortage of cars abate, rental prices should follow. Also, pandemic related, many insurance customers received discounts last year since they did not drive as much as usual. Those discounts are expiring, resulting in what amounts to temporary price increases. This sector was heavily affected by the pandemic and unease with travel. As the economy normalizes, we expect most prices in this category to revert to historical norms. This sector will likely provide a deflationary pull on CPI in the future. Used Cars There is a severe shortage of used cars related to the pandemic. The graph below shows the resulting surge in the Manheim Used Car price index. Once the chip shortage and other problems reducing the production of new cars abate, used cars will become more plentiful. At such time, likely in the next six to nine months, used car prices will plummet. While car prices tend to be sticky, we believe the recent aberration in used car prices will not hold. As we have seen, despite a small contribution, used car prices can have a significant effect. The same math will hold when prices correct as well. Gasoline Gasoline and energy, in general, are the wildcard in any inflation forecast. Energy accounts for 7.1% of CPI, and gasoline is over half of that. Gas prices are highly flexible. They typically oscillate with economic growth and oil production. OPEC production is still limited although increasing, and U.S. Shale production remains slow to come back online. At the same time, demand, as measured by the amount of product supplied, fully recovered. If energy prices sustain current levels, the incentive to produce will increase and result in downward price pressures. A natural slowing of economic activity will potentially reduce demand.  We think gasoline and oil prices generally are likely to stay near current levels but risk price reductions. As such, the contribution from higher gasoline prices will decline significantly. Future Inflation We think the current inflationary surge is temporary. When flexible prices, especially some of those mentioned, normalize, inflation is likely to follow suit. This is an uneasy forecast. The following are key factors that can prove us wrong: * Shelter, accounting for a third of CPI, starts rising in line with house and rent prices. * Wages continue to gain momentum, further increasing demand for goods while the supply and production lines are not fully operational. * Round after round of fiscal stimulus continues, further driving demand. * An inflationary mindset infiltrates consumer behavior. If people think prices will rise in the future, they are more likely to spend at today’s “cheaper” prices, again driving demand. Summary We remind ourselves daily to be humble as we are in unchartered territory. Trying to predict the future in normal times is hard enough. Trying to predict it today with so many unparalleled factors is fraught with risk.  All we can do is follow the data, watch for emerging trends, and track consumer behavioral trends closely. While we believe that recent price increases are temporary, we are not wed to that forecast. Importantly, neither are our investment decisions. Review inflation one day at a time and take everyone’s inflation forecast with a grain of salt. Tyler Durden Thu, 07/29/2021 - 05:00

UK Plans To Remove Chinese State-Owned Firm From Nuclear Energy Projects In Latest Sign Of Growing Mistrust

UK Plans To Remove Chinese State-Owned Firm From Nuclear Energy Projects In Latest Sign Of Growing Mistrust When President Trump was in office, the White House and the Pentagon aggressively lobbied No. 10 to ban components made by Chinese telecom giant Huawei from the UK's 5G network. In the end, while Great Britain agreed to some restrictions, it didn't deliver on what the White House had pushed for. In another indication of the growing mistrust between China and the US, the UK is looking for a way to remove state-owned Chinese firms from several civilian nuclear-energy projects. The news comes as Hong Kong's kangaroo courts (no longer subject to the rigid strictures of British Common Law) hand down the first of what's bound to be many convictions under the new national security law imposed by Beijing, the FT reports that the UK is seeking to remove all Chinese firms from its heavily regulated nuclear power industry. After a spree of deals in the mid-2010s, the British government is seeking to remove China General Nuclear from all projects, a decision that would have a dramatic impact on plans to build a plant at Bradwell-on-Sea in Essex using Chinese reactor technology. Apparently, CGN is so deeply involved in the project, that booting them might lead to a fresh start. The FT cited the backlash to Hong Kong - Britain has allowed Hong Kongers to migrant to the UK, a move that has greatly angered Beijing - as well as the CCP's persecution of the Uyghers in Xinjiang for contributing to the souring in mutual trust (as Beijing would probably describe it). Another issue is letting the fox into the hen house, so to speak. Ultimately, fear that by working with China, the UK might place some of NATO's most precious military secrets at risk is probably why this has suddenly become a priority. The decision to reconsider nuclear power partners comes as the US and its allies in Europe and Asia are increasingly looking to prevent China from obtaining sensitive technology and to protect their own supply chains from being "over-reliant" on Chinese technology and China. The FT also described the decision as the biggest dig against China by the British government since the Huawei incident. But let's not forget that just last week, the US and a handful of its closest allies banded together to condemn China for it's alleged culpability in the Microsoft Exchange hack, and other cyber attacks. Now, China and Russia are united as the major cyber-adversaries of the US. And just today, President Biden said that the next "hot war" might start as a cyber war. The UK has been working with Chinese firms on its nuclear power program since 2015, via an agreement that was endorsed by former Tory PM David Cameron. The deal allowed CGN to become a 20% partner in the development of a planned Sizewell C plant on the Suffolk coast. The company even had an option to participate in the construction. It also secured Chinese investment in the 3.2 gigawatt Hinkley Point C nuclear power facility, currently being built in Somerset. CGN is also a developer of the proposed Bradwell B plant in Essex, where it plans to use its own Hualong HPR1000 reactor technology (designed especially to stop working right at the critical moment). . That Cameron oversaw the inking of several shady nuclear power deals with state-controlled Chinese firms is just one of many suspect actions undertaken either during his tenure in office, or after. At any rate, sources insider No. 10 are telling the FT that HMG is hoping the Chinese withdraw without a confrontation. In which case, this article would serve as a kind of message. Perhaps, in inking the deal, the UK was trying to get a look at Chinese tech, like the EPR technology first used by CGN's Taishan nuclear plant in southern China. The Chinese being booted from the deal could also create opportunities for investors in North America, the FT added. The US placed CGN on an export blacklist in 2019, accusing it of stealing technology "for military purposes" Per the FT, Theresa May came within an inch of throwing CGN off a project during her brief tenure as prime minister. When approached for comment by the FT, a spokesperson for No. 10 didn't confirm or deny the story, saying only this: "the government refused to confirm or deny that it no longer wanted CGN to take part in the nuclear programme. All nuclear projects in the UK are conducted under robust and independent regulation to meet the UK’s rigorous legal, regulatory and national security requirements, ensuring our interests are protected." It's just another example of how distrust of China will impact every industry and aspect of the economy. Tyler Durden Wed, 07/28/2021 - 04:15

Cuba's Embassy In Paris Damaged In Molotov Cocktail Attack

Cuba's Embassy In Paris Damaged In Molotov Cocktail Attack The Cuban Embassy in Paris has denounced as "terrorism" a Molotov cocktail attack Monday night, which it said caused significant damage. Noting that the overnight attack left no injuries to diplomatic staff or bystanders, an official statement pointed the finger at the United States, strangely enough, despite no suspects as yet being apprehended. The Foreign Ministry of Cuba published photos of what appeared the result of multiple Molotov cocktails thrown at the embassy to its official Twitter account showing the extent of the damage. It said a fire resulted, requiring French firefighters to respond to the scene and put out the blaze. Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez condemned the "terrorist attack" and went so far as to blame the US government, though perhaps implying 'indirect' responsibility related to recent widespread protests in Cuba against food and fuel shortages, and runaway inflation.... He said the United States' "continuous campaigns against our country that encourage these behaviors and for calls for violence, with impunity, from its territory". France Cuba Embassy Attack aftermath, via AP Below is the full press note (via rush translation) issued by the Cuban Embassy in France:  During the night of July 26 to 27, the Embassy of Cuba in France was the object of a terrorist attack perpetrated by two individuals who threw three Molotov cocktails, causing a fire on the facade and the entrance of this Mission. Cuban diplomatic personnel were not injured, but material damage was noted. Terrorist acts like this are encouraged by the United States government campaigns against our country by inciting actions using violence. The Cuban Embassy strongly condemns this criminal and terrorist act perpetrated against the Cuban representation and diplomatic personnel credited in France. Subsequent photos released of the immediate aftermath of the arson attempt confirmed the building had briefly caught fire as a result of the attack... Officials say US operatives are actively fueling anti-government protests in hopes of imposing regime change.  Biden has so far continued Trump's hardline stance, which has even including banning Cuban-Americans from sending remittances to their relatives on the island.  Tyler Durden Wed, 07/28/2021 - 02:45

Border Patrol Apprehends 20,000 Illegal Aliens In 1 Week In Busiest Sector

Border Patrol Apprehends 20,000 Illegal Aliens In 1 Week In Busiest Sector Authored by Charlotte Cuthbertson via The Epoch Times, South Texas’s Rio Grande Valley has been the busiest border sector for illegal alien crossings for years. But last week a sudden spike in numbers saw Border Patrol apprehend more than 20,000 illegal immigrants in one week. “It’s the hottest part of the summer and apprehensions are skyrocketing!” Border Patrol Chief for the sector Brian Hastings wrote on Twitter on July 25. Hastings said the number of large groups has increased, with a record-breaking 298 in one group encountered in La Grulla last week. “Within this group, a subject exhibiting COVID-19 related symptoms was transported to the hospital. At the hospital, the migrant tested positive for COVID-19,” a press release from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) stated. The most recent large groups have mostly contained citizens from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Venezuela, and Nicaragua, according to CBP. Border Patrol processing facilities in the region are once again overwhelmed and illegal immigrants are staying overnight on buses outside the facilities due to overcrowding, according to a source in the Rio Grande Valley. In the Del Rio Sector, which has become the second-busiest for Border Patrol apprehensions, illegal immigrants are sleeping outside between the Rio Grande and the border fence as the agency struggles to find transport and space to put them. On the morning of July 25, agents were dealing with around 350 illegal immigrants who had crossed within the last 18 hours—mostly Haitians, but also Cubans, Colombians, and a couple from Ghana. Several Haitians told The Epoch Times they had arrived across the river at 3 p.m. the day prior and slept outside while waiting for transport. A couple from Ghana said they crossed at 3 a.m. and slept in a nearby tree-covered area. A group of more than 350 illegal immigrants wait for Border Patrol after crossing the Rio Grande from Mexico into Del Rio, Texas, on July 25, 2021. (Charlotte Cuthbertson/The Epoch Times) Meanwhile, between the two sectors, in the city of Laredo—where busloads of illegal immigrants from the Rio Grande Valley are being sent—officials have sued the Biden administration to stop the transport of more illegal immigrants into the city. Laredo officials say in the complaint that they were recently advised that Border Patrol intends to double the number of illegal immigrants brought to Laredo from the Rio Grande Valley—from about 150 individuals to 300 per day. By June, Border Patrol had apprehended more than 1 million illegal immigrants along the almost 2,000-mile southwest border. Each month this year has seen an increase in apprehensions, with no sign of it dropping off as the focus from headquarters is on speeding up the processing. Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz said in late June that agents had detected, but not captured, a further 250,000 illegal immigrants so far this fiscal year. Title 42—which is the public health emergency measure allowing Border Patrol to quickly turn back to Mexico some single adults—is largely seen as the remaining vestige of border control. The measure is expected to be removed imminently and Border Patrol is bracing for an even bigger influx as single adults would then need to be placed through a much longer process under Title 8 immigration proceedings and likely many will be released into the United States. Israel Blamed For Fresh Airstrikes Deep Inside Iraq

Israel Blamed For Fresh Airstrikes Deep Inside Iraq BBC is reporting a possible rare Israeli airstrike deep inside Iraq targeting pro-Iranian militias at Najaf, Iraq. BBC Middle East correspondent Nafiseh Kohnavard writes that "Iran-backed Imam Ali Brigade says that airstrikes targeted their ammunition depot in Najaf, Iraq."  In addition "Some paramilitary groups-linked channels claim that Israel is behind the attack," according to Kohnavard. "Israel carried out an attack on a PMF base" Iran-backed groups-linked claim in the aftermath of a severe fire that broke out at an ammunition depot in Najaf. Though Israeli involvement is being widely alleged in Iraqi social media, there's as yet been no confirmation from any official side. 🇮🇱 #IAF Air Strike on Najaf 🇮🇶 pic.twitter.com/rhKqAGNnCk — INTELSky (@Intel_Sky) July 26, 2021 Separately Tehran-based Mehr News agency is confirming the attack, which it says involved drone strikes during the early evening Baghdad local time. However, official Iraqi sources were not immediately forthcoming in identifying blame. There's the other possibility that it could have been a US action, or the depot could have ignited by accident or related to the extreme heat currently besetting the region, some observers speculated. Regional media carried official Iraqi PMU statements as follows: "Hostile drones targeted one of the bases of the Division in Najaf province," Imam Ali Division said in a statement, reported by Iraqi state media. "The drone bombed one of the ammunition depots in al-Dilok Camp at 3:30pm on Monday before re-targeting the same camp at 5:30pm," it said. Though very rare, it wouldn't mark the first such Israeli action inside Iraq if confirmed. In July 2019 a series of strikes targeting Iran-backed groups appeared to be the work of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Tel Aviv later owned up to it. Despite the more hawkish Netanyahu recently leaving office, the new prime minister Naftali Bennett has vowed to not let up on military pressure targeting Iranian assets and interests in the region. On the other side of the border, in Syria, Israel has kept up an intense, almost weekly basis, bombing campaign against "Iran-backed groups" allies with President Bashar al-Assad. #BreakingNews It is being reported that an Israeli air strike targeted the Iraqi resistance PMU in #Najaf governorate, #Iraq Israel just opened a whole new front against a resistance force that for sure will not remain silent against such aggression. https://t.co/Z2eSN9jJNd — Marwa Osman || د. مروة عثمان (@Marwa__Osman) July 26, 2021 The strikes hit deep inside southern Iraq... Amid rumors that the US military could pull all troops out of Iraq next, as the Iraqi prime minister is pressuring Washington to do, Israel might decide to get in early to "fill the security vacuum" in terms of 'counter-Iran' military action. Woman Wearing Charlie Hebdo T-Shirt Stabbed At London Park In Broad Daylight

Woman Wearing Charlie Hebdo T-Shirt Stabbed At London Park In Broad Daylight A woman was attacked with a knife in broad daylight at a section of Hyde Park in London known as a venue for demonstrations specially protected as a "free speech" zone. The 39-year old victim was wearing a Charlie Hebdo T-shirt. Thankfully she survived the horrific broad daylight attack. The Daily Mail reports she suffered multiple stab wounds after a masked attacker started slashing at her. Blood was seen pouring down her face as the assailant fled, with Westminster Metropolitan Police later seeking the public's help in identifying the black-clad attacker.  Woman wearing a Charlie Hebdo T-shirt has been stabbed at Speakers' Corner in Hyde Park So we've got a teacher in hiding fearing for his life and people being stabbed on the streets pic.twitter.com/noj9mMKVf4 — Jamie Rightly 🇬🇧 (@JamieRightly) July 25, 2021 Police later described it as a "minor slash injury" for which she was treated at the scene and then transported to the hospital. The shocking attack was caught on multiple cell phone videos, and members of the public reportedly gave chase but the assailant got away. According to one local media report, the woman appears to be well-known for street preaching and ministry activities geared toward a Muslim audience, which points to a likely or even obvious motive in the attack, though police have yet to name one. "Speakers' Corner is a historic place for open-air debate where people are allowed to make speeches on any lawful subject," the report said of the Sunday attack. "Police did not identify the victim by name but social media said she was Hatun Tash, a preacher from a group called DCCI Ministries that says it seeks to preach the Christian Gospel to Muslims. Detectives said they had recovered a knife at the scene and the victim gave an account of what happened." Via The Post Millennial Police issued the following statement: "We know that this assault was witnessed by a number of people, many of whom captured it on their phones. I would ask them, if they have not already done so, to contact [the] police." Her identity was later widely confirmed on social media as indeed being Hatun Tash. World's Food Supplies In Jeopardy Amid Climate Disasters

World's Food Supplies In Jeopardy Amid Climate Disasters  Devastating floods in Germany, China, Turkey, and India. Scorching hot weather in the Western U.S. and Canada. Worst frost in two decades across Brazil. These recent weather phenomena are rapidly intensifying and threaten further food inflation already at decade highs.  We documented last week Brazil had some of the worst frost conditions in two decades. Temperatures dropped below zero and delivered a massive blow to farmers across the country's coffee belt. The result has been sky-high coffee prices.  Back-to-back heatwaves continue to scorch the Earth across the Western half of the U.S. The corn belt, which spans the Midwest, lacks rainfall, and hot weather could negatively impact crop development, leading to an underwhelming harvest.  In Europe, China, Turkey, and India, devastating floods have torn apart towns, damaged farmland, and killed hundreds of people. Torrential rains have the risk of sparking fungal diseases for grain crops.  "All of these events are touched by jet streams, strong and narrow bands of westerly winds blowing above the Earth's surface. The currents are generated when cold air from the poles clashes against hot air from the tropics, creating storms and other phenomena such as rain and drought," Bloomberg said.  "Jet streams are the weather—they create it, and they steer it," said Jennifer Francis, a senior scientist at the Woodwell Climate Research Center. "Sometimes the jet stream takes on a very convoluted pattern. When we see it taking big swings north and big dips southward, we know we're going to see some unusual weather conditions." Source: Bloomberg  Meteorologists worry whenever those swings and dips form omega-shaped curves that look like waves. When that happens, warm air travels further north and cold air penetrates further south. The result is a succession of unusually hot and cold weather systems along the same latitude. Under these conditions, winds often weaken and dangerous weather can remain stuck in the same place for days or weeks at a time—rather than just a few hours or a day—leading to prolonged rains and heatwaves. "It's just like when waves in the ocean get to a beach, overturn and break," said Tess Parker, a research fellow at the ARC Centre for Excellence for Climate Extremes at Monash University in Melbourne. "That can happen in the atmosphere as well, and if that happens you tend to catch a high- or low-pressure system that will become stationary." - Bloomberg So if it's a stalled high-pressure system in the Pacific Northwest producing relentless heatwaves or a low-pressure system that resulted in devastating German floods earlier this month - the jet steam's latest swings have produced incredible weather phenomena such as rain or drought or extreme temperatures.  "Things that are happening in one part of the world end up impacting all of us," said Agnes Kalibata, a United Nations special envoy for the 2021 Food Systems Summit and Rwanda's former agriculture minister. "We've underestimated as a world is just how frequently" weather could seriously disrupt the global food system.  Wild weather affects crop yields worldwide this year. Along with a monetary phenomenon by central banks flushing the world with trillions in credit, commodity prices have been pushed to decade extremes.  U.N.'s Food and Agriculture Organization's food price index is at a decade high and already has tremendous implications on societal trends that have already resulted in uprisings in various emerging market countries.  ... and it only took Bloomberg six months to catch up with SocGen's market skeptic Albert Edwards' warning that surging global food insecurity could result in an Arab Spring redux.  Edwards, who, unlike Goldman Sachs, began to worry about food inflation in December. Back then, he outlined similarities in rapid food inflation and how it played a considerable role in sparking unrest and ensuing revolutions in many Arab countries a decade ago.  More recently, Deutsche Bank's Jim Reid reminded us that emerging markets are more vulnerable to food insecurity since their consumers spend a far greater share of their income on food than those in the developed world. Analysts Michael Every and Michael Magdovitz of Rabobank warned that surging food prices could exacerbate global food insecurity, resulting in social unrest in weaker, emerging market countries.  The latest round of wicked weather worldwide suggests that food insecurity is set to worsen and negatively impact emerging market countries the most, where protests and uprisings are only beginning. More importantly, food inflation is here to stay..  Tyler Durden Mon, 07/26/2021 - 04:15

Eric Clapton Says He Won't Play At Shows Where COVID-19 Vaccination Proof Is Required

Eric Clapton Says He Won't Play At Shows Where COVID-19 Vaccination Proof Is Required Authored by Isabel van Brugen via The Epoch Times, Eric Clapton said on Wednesday that he will refuse to perform at venues where proof of vaccination against COVID-19 is required, after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the introduction of vaccine passports from September for certain events and venues. “Following the PM’s announcement on Monday the 19th of July 2021, I feel honour bound to make an announcement of my own: I wish to say that I will not perform on any stage where there is a discriminated audience present. Unless there is provision made for all people to attend, I reserve the right to cancel the show,” the musician said in a statement shared on architect and film producer Robin Monotti Graziadei’s Telegram account. Johnson on Monday announced that English nightclubs and venues with large crowds will require evidence of full COVID-19 vaccination upon entry from the end of September. His announcement came on England’s “freedom day,” which saw the lifting of most COVID-19 restrictions. “If we don’t do it now we’ve got to ask ourselves, when will we ever do it?” Johnson said of ending over a year of lockdown restrictions in the country. “This is the right moment but we’ve got to do it cautiously. We’ve got to remember that this virus is sadly still out there.” “I would remind everybody that some of life’s most important pleasures and opportunities are likely to be increasingly dependent on vaccination,” Johnson said. “There are already countries that require you to be double jabbed as a condition of quarantine-free travel, and that list seems likely to grow. And we are also concerned—as they are in other countries—by the continuing risk posed by nightclubs. His decision to roll out vaccine passes from the UK’s National Health Service for certain venues came after authorities in countries such as Israel and the Netherlands were forced to close nightclubs following large CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus clusters linked to their reopening. Clapton previously said he had a “disastrous” experience with the AstraZeneca vaccine, and blamed “propaganda” for pushing the two-dose experimental vaccine on him. “I took the first jab of AZ [AstraZeneca] and straight away had severe reactions which lasted ten days, I recovered eventually and was told it would be twelve weeks before the second one,” Clapton wrote in a statement in May. “About six weeks later I was offered and took the second AZ shot, but with a little more knowledge of the dangers. Needless to say the reactions were disastrous, my hands and feet were either frozen, numb, or burning, and pretty much useless for two weeks, I feared I would never play again, (I suffer with peripheral neuropathy and should never have gone near the needle). But the propaganda said the vaccine was safe for everyone.” Last month, Europe’s drug regulator, European Medicines Agency’s (EMA), identified a rare blood condition known as Vaxzevria as a potential side effect of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine. It urged those who previously had the capillary leak syndrome against receiving the shot. In April, the vaccine was associated with very rare and potentially lethal cases of blood clotting that come with a low platelet count. The World Heath Organization said in March that “the benefits of the AstraZeneca vaccine outweigh its risks and recommends that vaccinations continue.” According to Rolling Stone magazine, Clapton does not have any shows scheduled in the United Kingdom until May 2022. The musician has upcoming shows in North America this September. Tyler Durden Fri, 07/23/2021 - 05:00

"Sabotage, Disrupt, Delay": Mossad Reportedly Planning Expanded Strikes On Iran's Nuclear Facilities The New York-based Algemeiner newspaper, a Jewish publication focused on American and Israel-related news, has issued a detailed report unveiling Israeli intelligence contingency plans to ramp up sabotage efforts against Iran's nuclear facilities at a moment Vienna negotiations remain stalled into August. The publication cites Hebrew media sources to say "the IDF and the Mossad have emphasized to Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and the government generally that while it is necessary to prepare for the possibility of an Israeli air strike on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, such an approach would be greatly complicated by a renewed nuclear deal." Spate of mystery explosions have rocked Iran over much of past year, via Washington Post. This strongly suggests that Tel Aviv sees the window as closing on efforts to derail Iranian nuclear production capabilities, should Tehran and Washington inch closer to a restored JCPOA after Iranian president-elect Ebrahim Raisi takes office August 3rd. Iran, however, has maintained all along that its nuclear development is solely for peaceful domestic energy purposes. In the scenario of a future 'done deal' being reported out of Vienna amid the upcoming 7th round of talks, Israeli officials have expressed that any aerial bombing campaign would become too politically problematic - and could further risk a wider war, hence the need for smaller "surgical" operations. The report provides the following details on plans to expand the IDF and Mossad's counter-Iran capabilities:  Given all this, the IDF and the Mossad stressed that Israel should develop multiple operational plans, which could be put into operation whether the US signs a new deal with Iran or not. The goal of such operations would not be to destroy Iran’s nuclear program in a single blow, but to sabotage, disrupt, and delay the program indefinitely through surgical strikes and intelligence operations. This would be in keeping with current policy, which has seen major accidents, sabotage, and assassinations related to Iran’s nuclear program, most of which are believed to be the result of Israeli intelligence activity. Such covert espionage campaigns would begin with greater black budget funding, according to the Israeli sources cited in the report.  EXCLUSIVE: Sen. Lindsey Graham warns ALL ISRAEL NEWS that IDF may have to launch preemptive strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities soon https://t.co/uQtAvE9Ddd via @all_israel_news — All Israel News (@all_israel_news) July 21, 2021 More details are as follows: IDF sources said that further operations are already in the planning stages, saying, "There are big plans and small plans." The purpose of the operations is not solely military, but also to "humiliate the Iranians" and harm their morale, giving them the feeling that they are under siege by Israeli operations they are powerless to stop. Last summer especially saw major sabotage operations disrupt key infrastructure across Iran, which was widely blamed on Israeli intelligence, as well as more recent cyberattacks on the Natanz nuclear facility which caused fires and possibly explosions. Fires at oil facilities and factories have also been on the rise in recent months, making it hard to know what's an 'accident' and what's not. For example, in the month of June... If this latest stunning report out of Algemeiner is accurate, there's likely a lot more Israeli 'dirty tricks' inside Iran to come in the next weeks and months. Tyler Durden Thu, 07/22/2021 - 22:20

What Will This New Wave Of Lockdowns Do To The Global Economy?

What Will This New Wave Of Lockdowns Do To The Global Economy? Authored by Michael Snyder via TheMostImportantNews.com, For a few months a lot of people were convinced that humanity’s efforts to defeat COVID were being successful, and many believed that the pandemic would soon be behind us for good.  But now the “Delta variant” is spreading like wildfire all over the globe, and this is prompting national governments around the world to institute a new wave of restrictions and lockdowns.  Needless to say, the restrictions and lockdowns that we witnessed in 2020 were absolutely devastating for the global economy, and many areas of the planet remain economically depressed as a result.  As the “Delta variant” continues to spread, will this new wave of restrictions and lockdowns push the world economy into another major downturn during the second half of 2021? I am extremely concerned about how some national governments are choosing to respond to this new variant.  In particular, I think that officials in Australia have gone completely nuts.  Now that a third state has implemented new restrictions, more than half of the country is currently under lockdown… More than half of Australia’s 25 million people were under lockdown on Tuesday after a third state adopted movement curbs to rein in the highly contagious Delta variant of coronavirus. Australia’s infections and deaths are well below other developed nations, but its use of lockdowns, prompted by a sluggish vaccination campaign, is putting pressure on the national government, with polls at their lowest in a year and just months before elections are due to be held. Once upon a time, I used to recommend Australia as a potential relocation destination. But I don’t think that I will ever be able to recommend Australia again after what we have witnessed during this pandemic. Things have gotten really crazy in Japan as well.  Because they are hosting the Olympics, officials have instituted extremely strict restrictions, and this is definitely rubbing a lot of people the wrong way. Savannah Guthrie is in Japan right now, and she says that it is like “stepping back in time”… “They have very strict protocols here,” Savannah said. “In a way it’s like stepping back in time. At least for those of us in (the United States), at the height of the pandemic, we remember the washing of the hands, the mask-wearing, all of that. It’s just like that here. It’s really locked down here in Tokyo.” I don’t usually use the word “paranoia” very much, but in this case I believe that it is justified. Those that are traveling to Japan for the Olympics are being forced to be tested for COVID over and over again… Savannah said that the protocols began before she even left the United States. International visitors to Japan have to take two coronavirus tests before they get on a plane. The first has to be taken about 96 hours before travel, the second 72 hours before. After landing in Tokyo, visitors have to test again at the airport, and then take a daily test for the first three days in the country. But even with such dramatic restrictions, the “Delta variant” just continues to spread, and the head of the Tokyo games is openly admitting that he is “prepared to discuss a last-minute cancellation” of the Olympics… As Games-linked Covid cases continue to rise in a city rising in indignation at the Olympics taking place, Tokyo 2020 chief Toshiro Muto said he was prepared to discuss a last-minute cancellation. Isn’t that insane? According to Muto, officials are watching the number of new cases in Japan very carefully… “We can’t predict what will happen with the number of coronavirus cases. So we will continue discussions if there is a spike in cases. “We have agreed that based on the coronavirus situation, we will convene five-party talks again. “At this point, the coronavirus cases may rise or fall, so we will think about what we should do when the situation arises.” Over in France, the implementation of new “health pass” rules is creating a giant uproar… From July 21st, health passes are required to enter public cultural and leisure venues that welcome 50 people or more. This applies to venues such as theatres, cinemas, libraries, theme parks, concert halls, festivals, museums and monuments, and takes effect ahead of a wider extension of the health pass rules from August 1st. From now on, those that have not been vaccinated will be relegated to second class status in France, but the truth is that “fully vaccinated” people are catching the “Delta variant” too. In fact, a “fully vaccinated” White House official and a “fully vaccinated” aide to Nancy Pelosi both just tested positive for COVID. The “Delta variant” is taking the U.S. by storm, and Los Angeles County has become one of the epicenters of this new outbreak… Los Angeles County is now recording more than 10,000 coronavirus cases a week — a pace not seen since March — an alarming sign of the dangers the Delta variant poses to people who have not been vaccinated and heightening pressure on health officials to reverse the trend. A Los Angeles Times data analysis found L.A. County was recording 101 weekly coronavirus cases for every 100,000 residents, up from 12 for the seven-day period that ended June 15. That means the county has surpassed the threshold to have “high” community transmission of the disease, the worst tier as defined by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Mask mandates are back, and that certainly will not help the California economy, but what many small business owners are deathly afraid of is another long-term lockdown… “In general, nobody likes wearing masks – I don’t know anyone that cheers having to wear one – but if the choice is another 15 months of shutdown or wearing a mask inside, then I will be happy to wear a mask,” said Cache Bouren, owner of Haberdasher in San Jose. “Facing the idea of another six to eight months without any real revenue coming [is] a very scary thing,” admitted Bouren, who is set to open up a new bar called Cash Only soon. In 2020, countless small businesses in the United States shut their doors on a permanent basis, and countless others barely survived. In fact, one recent survey found that approximately 20 percent of all the small businesses that actually survived “came frighteningly close” to shutting down for good… One in five small business owners came frighteningly close to shuttering their business for good during the COVID-19 pandemic. A new survey polled 1,000 small business executives to analyze the impact the pandemic had on their businesses and how they’re planning to recover moving forward. Three in four respondents agree the past year was the hardest they’ve ever had in business. Those challenges include dealing with decreased sales (46%), fewer customers (42%), and lower production (37%). Two in five small business executives had to take a pay cut to keep their companies afloat during COVID. Other areas bosses cut down on in 2020 include the cost of supplies (40%) and marketing budgets (37%). We simply cannot afford another round of lockdowns here in the United States. And the same thing is true for countries all over the globe that have previously experienced lockdowns. But as the “Delta variant” continues to spread, it appears to be inevitable that more new lockdowns will continue to be rolled out. Is this going to be the answer every time a new health crisis erupts?  Because I believe that we have now entered an “era of pestilences”, and I also believe that the health threats that are ahead of us are going to be far worse than what we have already been through. The world economy was just getting back to some semblance of “normalcy”, and now things are starting to get completely nuts again. This pandemic is like a nightmare that never seems to end, and the way that officials have reacted all over the world has just made things even worse. *  *  * It is finally here! Michael’s new book entitled “7 Year Apocalypse” is now available in paperback and for the Kindle on Amazon. Tyler Durden Thu, 07/22/2021 - 05:00

OVER HALF OF AUSTRALIA’S POPULATION IS NOW UNDER LOCKDOWN

by Mac Slavo, SHTF Plan: Over half of Australia’s population has been locked down again over the elitists “fears” of the “delta variant” spreading.  Even though the numbers of cases of COVID-19 and the “delta variant” are extremely low, low enough to be statistically irrelevant, the rulers continue to use lockdowns as their go-to solution […]

Russia Unveils "Checkmate": Its Latest, 5th Generation Stealth Fighter

Russia Unveils "Checkmate": Its Latest, 5th Generation Stealth Fighter  Russian aircraft manufacturer JSC Sukhoi Company unveiled a new fifth-generation fighter jet that will supplement the Sukhoi Su-57 stealth fighter. Moscow plans to export the new fighter jet to countries around the world. Such was the buzz over the reveal that even President Vladimir Putin examined the Sukhoi Checkmate at the country's annual MAKS Air Show on Tuesday. The new plane is expected to compete with the US Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II.  Pesawat satu enjin Gen-5 terbaru Russia, "Checkmate" dibangunkan oleh Sukhoi Design Bureau. pic.twitter.com/fid280tmPL — mohdhaikalisa (@cbce1d62d507435) July 20, 2021 According to RT News, Sukhoi said the first flight of the new jet is set to occur in 2023, and deliveries are to begin in 2026.  "We have been working on the project for just slightly longer than one year. Such a fast development cycle was possible only with the help of advanced computer technologies and virtual testing," Yuri Slyusar, CEO of United Aircraft Corporation, said at MAKS. The Checkmate is a single-engine supersonic stealth fighter with internal weapon bays and short take-off capability. The maximum speed is Mach 1.8 with a 1,740-mile flight range. The total payload capacity is 16,300 pounds.  Russia's Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov expects Checkmate to be sold to China, India, Vietnam, and African countries.  He said foreign customers are expected to order up to 300 aircraft.  Borisov said one customer, who wanted to remain anonymous, showed strong interest in the jet.  The unveiling came one day after Sukhoi published a teaser video depicting pilots from around the world receiving the message, "It's coming.:"  Checkmate is a much more affordable version of the SU-57 and cheaper than the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor and F-35, making stealth technology available for all.  Russia also plans to dominate the hypersonic weapons space with its latest test of the Zircon missile that is expected to be deployed with warships and submarines in the not too distant future.  Russia is catching up, having outfield the US in hypersonic weapons and could become an export giant of fifth-generation fighter jets in the back half of this decade.   Tyler Durden Wed, 07/21/2021 - 23:40

Watch: California Shoplifters Stroll Out Of TJ Maxx With Arms Full Of Merchandise

Watch: California Shoplifters Stroll Out Of TJ Maxx With Arms Full Of Merchandise In yet another example of California's decline under Democratic leadership, two men were caught on film casually walking out of a suburban Los Angeles TJ Maxx store while carrying armfulls of merchandise - just seven months after LA District Attorney George Gascón announced his office would no longer prosecute misdemeanor crimes such as shoplifting. Thanks to Prop 47 thefts under $950 will not be prosecuted, so cops will not bother showing up. Just a reminder that you get what you voted for, California! pic.twitter.com/jWUPdJzy0A — Adam Carolla (@adamcarolla) July 20, 2021 The incident occurred at the TJ Maxx in Granada Hills. Neither man has been charged or arrested, though the LAPD continues to investigate the incident. "They didn’t even run out, they walked out," said LAPD Sgt. Jerretta Sandoz in a statement to CBS LA. "And so, that’s sending a message that we, the criminals, are winning." Sandoz, who serves as vice president of the Los Angeles Police Protective League, said she blames the incident on Prop 47, a 2014 referendum that lowered criminal sentences on crimes such as shoplifting.  "If they’re caught, they’re probably given the equivalent of a traffic ticket," she told CBS LA. "So it’s not taken seriously." "If you let these criminals think that they can go in and steal merchandise and steal things, what happens when someone tries to stop them," Sandoz added. -Fox News Recall that Gascón is the same DA who in April dissolved or downsized the city's hardcore gangs and narcotics units ahead of a spike in homicides to 13-year highs - for which LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva directly blames him. The video illustrates the latest in a spate of shoplifting across the state. In San Francisco, business owners and security officials are decrying the "lawlessness" in the city caused by shoplifters. "This is really bad. I’ve been in the Bay area 20 years, I’ve never seen this," a local security guard, J.C. Hernandez, told Fox News, adding "It's just lawlessness ... people are just openly coming in and stealing stuff." Tyler Durden Wed, 07/21/2021 - 22:20

New Post-Brexit Rift Forms Over Gibraltar

New Post-Brexit Rift Forms Over Gibraltar By PA via The Epoch Times, A new major rift has emerged between the UK and the European Union concerning the post-Brexit relationship over Gibraltar. Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said a draft mandate for talks published by the bloc on Tuesday “seeks to undermine the UK’s sovereignty” over the British overseas territory. He demanded it “cannot form a basis for negotiations” as he urged the EU to “think again.” But the bloc’s post-Brexit negotiator, Maros Sefcovic, said the mandate seeks to find a “positive impact” for those living either side of the border with Spain while protecting the single market. Gibraltar, whose sovereignty is disputed by Spain and Britain, currently remains subject to the rules of the free-travel Schengen area, keeping the border with Spain open. The territory was not included within the trade agreement brokered between the EU and the UK last year and a separate deal must be brokered. In a statement, Raab said: “The UK, with Gibraltar, and Spain carefully agreed a pragmatic framework agreement, in full consultation with the EU commission. “The commission’s proposed mandate, published today, directly conflicts with that framework. It seeks to undermine the UK’s sovereignty over Gibraltar, and cannot form a basis for negotiations. “We have consistently showed pragmatism and flexibility in the search for arrangements that work for all sides, and we are disappointed that this has not been reciprocated. We urge the EU to think again.” The European Commission said the proposed negotiating directives “put forward solutions to remove physical checks and controls on persons and goods” at the border between Spain and Gibraltar. “It is without prejudice to the issues of sovereignty and jurisdiction, and focuses on cooperation in the region,” the bloc added. The mandate includes rules for establishing responsibility for asylum, visas, residence permits, and police cooperation and information exchange. Sefcovic, a commission vice-president, said: “By putting forward this draft mandate, we are honouring the political commitment we made to Spain to start the negotiations of a separate agreement between the EU and the UK on Gibraltar. “This is a detailed mandate, which aims to have a positive impact for those living and working on either side of the border between Spain and Gibraltar, while protecting the integrity of the Schengen Area and the Single Market.” Tyler Durden Wed, 07/21/2021 - 05:00

"Hellish" Noise Complaints Lodged About £30,000 Per Week Luxury London Flat...Owned By The Vatican

"Hellish" Noise Complaints Lodged About £30,000 Per Week Luxury London Flat...Owned By The Vatican A flat in London that is owned by none other than the Vatican has come under controversy for the amount of "hellish noise" coming from the unit late at night. The £30,000 per week luxury flat in question is at Hans Place in Chelsea, FT reported this week. Complaints about "loud events" with some involving DJs, have been lodged with the local council, the report notes. The unit is 9,000 square feet and houses a large garden and indoor swimming pool.  The property was bought among other luxury London properties in 2014 in a purchase that was "overseen by cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu". Becciu was the first cardinal in modern times to be charged with financial crimes by the Vatican this year. Other investments overseen by Becciu have been "under mounting international scrutiny as a result of the allegations brought against him", the FT reports. The London flat, and other properties, are held through Jersey shell companies through a Vatican unit in charge of "charitable donations that are intended for the poor and needy". A local resident told the Financial Times that "people at the property held noisy parties and social gatherings there", including parties that went into the early hours of the morning. As a result, neighbors lodged various complaints.  One such resident complaint cited "hellish noise" coming from the property. Another tried to go right to the source: “I have written to Apostolic Nuncio (the Vatican ambassador) but they have done nothing about this”. “With restrictions lifting hopefully people can party in night clubs not in flats,” the local council told FT. They are still investigating the complaints, the report notes. And despite the Vatican ownership, no complaints openly suggested that any Vatican employees were present at any of the late night gatherings.  Becciu denies wrongdoing and had "no role in overseeing the rental or management of any London property owned by the Vatican".
